Escalation between US and Iranian forces in the Strait of Hormuz
On Thursday, an escalation of hostilities occurred between the United States and Iran near the Strait of Hormuz. A US official reported that American forces shot down four Iranian drones and struck a ground control station in Bandar Abbas, describing the actions as defensive measures to maintain a ceasefire established in April. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated they launched a retaliatory strike against a US airbase, claiming it was the origin of the attack on the control station. The incident followed President Donald Trump's rejection of a reported unofficial agreement regarding commercial shipping in the region. Kuwait reported responding to missile and drone activity without identifying the source, while Israel noted sirens in the north amid ongoing tensions with Hezbollah. Oil prices rebounded by more than 3% following the news, and stock markets declined. The events have placed the fragile April ceasefire under significant pressure.
