Dormitory fire at girls' school in Kenya results in casualties

A fire occurred shortly after midnight at the Utumishi Girls' Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County, Kenya. Government reports indicate 16 students died, while police figures suggest at least 15 fatalities. Education Minister Julius Migos reported 79 students were injured, with 71 subsequently discharged from hospital. Students at the school are between 15 and 18 years old. While authorities state the official cause is under investigation, some anonymous first responders cited reports from survivors claiming a student started the fire using a mattress and matches. Reports also noted that some dormitory doors were locked at the time, complicating evacuation. Kenyan officials confirmed that over 100 school fires have been recorded in 2024 alone. A search is currently underway for students who fled the scene in panic during the incident.
