Police increase patrols for the holiday long weekend
Police in Cyprus and the British Base Areas have announced increased security measures for the long weekend from Saturday, May 30, 2026, to Monday, June 1, 2026. Authorities will intensify road patrols on highways and major arteries to prevent accidents, focusing on speeding, alcohol, and drug-related traffic violations. Drivers are advised to strictly follow traffic codes and police instructions due to expected heavy congestion. Simultaneously, the British Base police, represented by Deputy Assistant Police Commissioner Markos Petrou, confirmed that patrols will be bolstered in both eastern and western base sectors. Officials have issued a specific warning regarding the increased risk of opportunistic thefts from vehicles and unattended personal items at beaches. The public is strongly encouraged to leave valuables at home or secure them inside vehicles rather than carrying them to the shore. These efforts aim to ensure public safety and mitigate risks during the public holiday period.
