Eurostat reports rise in at-risk-of-poverty rates in Cyprus and the EU for 2025

Eurostat data based on 2024 income statistics indicates that the at-risk-of-poverty rate in Cyprus rose to 14.9% in 2025, affecting approximately 146,000 people. This represents an increase from the 14.6% recorded in 2024, which corresponded to roughly 140,000 individuals. At the European Union level, 72.4 million people are at risk of poverty, representing 16.3% of the population, an increase of 0.1 percentage points. Some reports cite the EU average at 16.4%, showing minor discrepancies in statistical rounding. Romania, Malta, and France recorded the highest rates, while the Czech Republic, Belgium, and Denmark reported the lowest. Individuals are classified as at risk of poverty if their disposable income falls below 60% of their nation's median disposable income. The indicator serves as a measure of low income relative to the national population rather than an absolute measure of wealth.
