Report shows Cyprus lags in access to innovative medicines
A survey conducted by the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA) and released on May 19, 2026, reveals that Cyprus ranks 21st out of 36 countries regarding patient access to new therapies. Out of 168 innovative medicines approved by EU authorities between 2021 and 2024, only 66 are available in Cyprus, representing 39% of the total compared to the European average of 45%. The research highlights that 92% of these available drugs in Cyprus are subject to special procedures or access restrictions, whereas Germany provides unrestricted access to its medicines. Regarding the time required for a drug to reach the market after European approval, the average wait in Cyprus is 528 days, which is lower than the 597-day European average. However, the range remains vast across Europe, spanning from 158 days in Germany to 1,110 days in Romania. In the specific sector of oncology, Cyprus performed better, with 32 out of 56 approved cancer treatments available. Local industry representatives cite historical deficiencies in evaluation and reimbursement procedures as the main contributors to these challenges.
