Cabinet approves new legislation to reform medical boards in Cyprus
The Cyprus Cabinet approved a bill titled 'The Establishment and Operation of Medical Boards Law 2026' on Wednesday at the Presidential Palace. Health Minister Neofytos Charalambides announced that the reform aims to replace the current fragmented system with a unified, transparent framework. The primary goal is to improve the efficiency, speed, and quality of service provided to citizens during medical assessments. A significant change introduced by the law is the expansion of the pool of doctors authorized to participate in these boards. Both doctors employed by the State Health Services Organisation (OKYPY) and private doctors contracted with the Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) will now be eligible to conduct evaluations. This measure is intended to address physician shortages in the public sector and ensure consistent, fair treatment for all patients. The government expects these legislative changes to enhance the overall reliability of the medical assessment process in the country.
