Cypriot cities mark Kataklysmos holiday with weekend festivities
Cyprus celebrated the Kataklysmos festival over the long weekend ending June 1, 2026, with widespread events in Larnaca, Ayia Napa, Limassol, Paphos, and Latsi. The festivities featured traditional Greek music concerts by artists including Kostas Makedonas, Rena Morphi, and Ilias Vrettos. In Limassol, programs included heritage dances and boat cruises from the Molos docks. Paphos shifted its water sports competitions from the Kato Paphos harbor to the Municipal Baths due to water quality standards, while canceling the traditional grease pole contest for safety reasons. Local markets were established along Paphos' Poseidonos Avenue, selling traditional goods like soutzouko and handicrafts. Authorities emphasized the cultural significance of the festival for both residents and tourists. Despite varying local programs, all municipal events across the island experienced high attendance, supported by lifeguards ensuring public safety at beaches.
