European Commission initiates infringement procedures against eight EU member states

The European Commission has sent formal letters of notice to Cyprus, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Croatia, Malta, Austria, and Portugal. This action follows the failure of these countries to incorporate Directive (EU) 2024/782, which amends Directive 2005/36/EC regarding professional qualifications, into their national legislation by the March 4, 2026, deadline. The directive mandates updated educational requirements for nurses responsible for general care, dentists, and pharmacists to reflect modern scientific and technical advancements. Key areas requiring curriculum updates include e-health, digital technologies, immunology, regenerative medicine, biopharmaceuticals, biotechnology, genetics, and pharmacogenomics. The affected member states have been granted two months to respond, complete the transposition into national law, and notify the Commission of these measures. Failure to provide a satisfactory response may lead the Commission to issue a reasoned opinion. This regulatory step ensures consistent training standards for these medical professions across the European Union.
