Russian drone strikes residential building in Galați, Romania

On May 29, 2026, a Russian drone struck a residential building in the Romanian city of Galați during a night attack targeting Ukraine. The explosion on the 10th floor caused a fire, injured two people, and led to the evacuation of 70 residents. General Gheorghe Maxim stated that the Romanian military could not intercept the drone in the four minutes they had to react. In response, Romanian President Nicușor Dan declared the Russian consul general in Constanța persona non grata and ordered the closure of the consulate. NATO officials, including Mark Rutte, condemned the incident as irresponsible and reaffirmed the alliance's commitment to defend every inch of its territory.
