UNESCO intergovernmental committee calls for renewed talks on Parthenon Sculptures

The UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for Promoting the Return of Cultural Property to its Countries of Origin met in Paris last week to discuss the Parthenon Sculptures. The committee formally called upon Greece and the United Kingdom to resume active negotiations regarding the status of these artifacts. Greece maintains that the sculptures, removed in the early 19th century by Lord Elgin during Ottoman rule, were taken without valid legal documentation and constitute an indivisible part of the Acropolis monument. The United Kingdom reaffirmed its traditional position that the sculptures were legally acquired and noted that current British legislation restricts the permanent return of items from national collections. Several member states, including Italy, Brazil, Egypt, and China, expressed support for the Greek request during the proceedings. While the British legal framework remains a barrier, the publication Le Petit Journal reported that the current diplomatic atmosphere appears to be shifting in favor of the Greek position.
