Akrotiri residents challenge British Bases expansion plan

Residents of Akrotiri, Cyprus, are opposing a British Bases project to install 32 additional antennas, which involves the compulsory acquisition of approximately 340 skalas of community land. The area is currently designated as environmentally protected, and local groups argue that existing installations are already overburdened. Community members have expressed concerns regarding a perceived link between these radio installations and rising cancer rates in the locality. Epidemiological studies and a private Environmental Impact Assessment have been commissioned to evaluate any potential health or environmental correlations. Mayor of Kourion, Pantelis Georgiou, who chairs the Merra Akrotiri Management Committee, has appointed lawyer Simos Angelides to explore legal options, including a potential injunction. Additionally, the Kourion Municipality has engaged lawyer Achilleas Demetriades to pursue the matter before the European Court of Human Rights. Local representatives have requested formal meetings with the President of Cyprus and relevant government ministries to address these grievances.
