Cyprus activates national emergency alert system
On June 2, 2026, Cyprus officially launched the CY-Alert system, a Cell Broadcast technology designed to send real-time emergency notifications to mobile devices. This system allows authorities to bypass network congestion and send alerts to all compatible handsets in a specific geographic area, even if they are on silent mode or lack an internet connection. To ensure functionality, the government scheduled a series of trial notifications between June 2 and June 15, 2026, in various communities including Pissouri, Moniatis, Psevdas, Argaka, Avgorou, Ora, Foinis, and Kalopanayiotis. These tests are clearly marked as "Test" or "Exercise" and require no action from the public. Authorities noted that users must keep their device software updated to receive alerts, and a technical helpline is available at 1450. Concerns regarding elderly citizens or those without smartphones were addressed by officials, who confirmed that the system functions alongside existing sirens and SMS messaging as part of a multi-layered civil protection strategy.
