Cyprus launches national CY-Alert emergency notification system
The Cyprus Civil Defence officially launched the national emergency warning system, CY-Alert, on 2 June 2026. This system utilizes cell broadcast technology to send real-time alerts directly to mobile devices in high-risk areas, regardless of the mobile provider or SIM card origin. Notifications do not require internet access, mobile data, or registration, and they are accompanied by a distinct warning sound and vibration. Between 2 June and 15 June 2026, authorities will conduct a series of scheduled tests in selected locations, including Pissouri, Moniatis, Psevdas, Argaka, Avgorou, Ora, Foini, and Kalopanagiotis. These test messages will be clearly marked as 'TEST' or 'EXERCISE' to ensure the public understands no action is required. A nationwide test involving an alert for a missing person is scheduled for 15 June 2026. Citizens are encouraged to ensure their device software is updated and emergency alert settings are enabled, with further guidance available via the 1450 hotline. The system serves as a critical upgrade to the country's civil protection infrastructure following identified gaps in disaster response.
