Hungarian Prime Minister negotiates the release of frozen EU funds
On May 29, 2026, Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar traveled to Brussels to meet with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The objective is to reach a political agreement for the release of EU funds previously frozen during Viktor Orbán's tenure due to concerns regarding the rule of law and corruption. The stake includes 6.5 billion euros in grants and 3.9 billion euros in low-interest loans from the Recovery Fund, which face an August 31 deadline. Additionally, approximately 7 billion euros in structural funds remain frozen without an urgent deadline. These resources are considered vital for the Hungarian economy, which has stagnated for three years, and for the state budget. Magyar expressed optimism that an agreement is near, though some corruption-related conditions remain outstanding. During his visit, the Prime Minister also condemned a drone strike on a residential building in Romania and reaffirmed his commitment to EU and NATO unity.
