EU official reaffirms support for Cyprus settlement process

During an informal meeting of foreign ministers in Limassol this week, European Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Suica stated that the European Union is prepared to support the Cyprus settlement process at all stages. The Commissioner emphasized that the EU stands for the resumption of official negotiations under the auspices of the United Nations. She noted that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen discussed the Cyprus issue with President Erdogan. Suica described Turkey as an important partner and underscored that a cooperative relationship must be based on international law and maintaining good neighborly relations. The Commissioner's comments precede the upcoming arrival of Maria Angela Holguin, the personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General. Additionally, Suica highlighted the strategic role of Cyprus and the ongoing collaboration regarding the Mediterranean Pact. She addressed the need for regional stability, security, and cooperation in energy and connectivity, noting that the EU is increasingly active in the region.
