Recent election results impact Cyprus political landscape
Following the elections held on May 24, the Democratic Rally (DISY) secured 27.1-27.2% of the vote, while the Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL) received 23.9%. Other parties, including EDEK, DIPA, the Greens, and Volt, failed to meet the threshold for parliamentary representation. These results signify a reinforcement of the traditional political duopoly, with DIKO maintaining 10% support as a supporter of President Nikos Christodoulides. Analysts note that the outcome has weakened President Christodoulides, complicating his position ahead of the 2028 presidential elections. Meanwhile, DISY leader Annita Demetriou and AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou have initiated strategies for the upcoming June 4 parliamentary leadership elections. The election results indicate that the Cypriot public has opted for stability over radical political experimentation. Additionally, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres continues efforts regarding the Cyprus reunification process before his term ends in December.
