Drone strike reported at Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that a drone strike hit a turbine building at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which has been under Russian control since March 2022. The strike resulted in a hole in the building's wall, although the IAEA and Russian officials stated that no critical equipment was damaged. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi condemned the incident, warning that attacking nuclear facilities is dangerous. Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom and its head, Alexey Likhachev, accused Ukrainian forces of intentionally targeting the plant. Conversely, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs denied the allegations, stating that the claims lack logic and questioning why Ukraine would target its own facility. The plant remains located near the active front line in southeastern Ukraine, raising continued concerns about the risk of a nuclear accident.
