29-year-old man arrested after attacking police in Famagusta district

On Saturday, May 30, 2026, police officers from the Xylofagou and Xylotymbou stations attempted to execute an outstanding arrest warrant for a 29-year-old man in a village in the Famagusta district. The suspect had failed to appear in court for ongoing legal proceedings. Upon encountering the officers outside his residence around 5:30 p.m., the man allegedly threatened them while holding a knife and a box cutter. He subsequently resisted arrest and physically assaulted the officers, inflicting abrasions primarily on their arms. The officers successfully subdued the suspect and took him into custody on both the existing warrant and new charges. Following the incident, the injured officers were treated at Famagusta General Hospital and discharged shortly after. On Sunday, the Famagusta District Court ordered that the suspect be remanded in custody until Tuesday. The Xylofagou Police Station is continuing the investigation into the matter.
