Construction of Cyprus Archaeological Museum extended to 2027

The construction of the new Archaeological Museum of Cyprus, which began on January 9, 2023, is currently underway at the former site of the Nicosia General Hospital. The project, led by the Iacovou–Cyfield joint venture and designed by Theoni Xanthi, is considered the largest single-phase public works project in the country. While the initial schedule faced delays, the construction consortium has officially requested an extension to finish the building in December 2027. Despite this one-year delay, officials confirmed that the total cost will remain at the originally agreed-upon €144 million with no additional financial claims from the contractors. The complex structural design features three elevated volumes, specialized climate-controlled display cases, and the preservation of the old Pulmonology Clinic. Following the completion of construction in 2027, the Department of Antiquities expects an additional two-year period to finalize the interior exhibits and transfer collections. Authorities have described the extension as reasonable given the extreme technical and engineering complexity of the site.
