Nicosia police investigate online banking fraud involving a mobile application

The Nicosia Criminal Investigation Department (TAE) is investigating a fraud case involving the theft of 2,992 euros from a citizen's bank account. On May 26, the victim received a phone call from a woman speaking English with an Asian accent, who claimed to be an official from an online financial transaction platform. Using false security concerns regarding the victim's account as a pretext, the caller persuaded the victim to install a specific application on their mobile phone. Once installed, the application allowed the suspect to gain remote access to the victim's phone and online banking credentials. The suspect subsequently transferred 2,992 euros from the account. The police have officially requested that the public remain vigilant and avoid granting third parties access to electronic devices or personal banking details. Authorities further advise citizens to verify any unsolicited communication only through the official channels of the involved organizations.
