Upcoming election for the 81st President of the UN General Assembly
The election for the President of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly is scheduled for Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the UN headquarters in New York. The position belongs to the Asia-Pacific Group under the established regional rotation, which includes the Republic of Cyprus. The two candidates vying for the role are the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, Khalilur Rahman, and the Cypriot Ambassador, Andreas Kakouris. The 81st session is regarded as critical due to its overlap with the selection process for a new UN Secretary-General and the implementation of the Pact for the Future. Andreas Kakouris has emphasized the need to restore trust in multilateralism amid ongoing global crises. An informal interactive dialogue was held with member states, convened by the President of the 80th Session, Annalena Baerbock. The election will take place in the General Assembly Hall.
