Eurostat reports on 2025 single-parent household statistics

Data published by Eurostat for the 2025 Global Day of Parents shows that single-parent households with children represent 12.9 per cent of all such households across the European Union, totaling approximately 6.1 million families. In Cyprus, the rate of single-parent households stands at 10.2 per cent. Significant variations exist among member states, with Estonia reporting the highest rate at 40.6 per cent, while Slovakia recorded the lowest at 3.1 per cent, followed by Greece at 3.8 per cent and Slovenia at 4.0 per cent. Regarding household composition, 60.1 per cent of these families have one child, 30.9 per cent have two, and 9 per cent have three or more. The data further indicates that 81.6 per cent of single-parent households are led by women, compared to 18.4 per cent led by men. The Global Day of Parents, established by the UN General Assembly in 2012, is observed annually on June 1. For 2026, UNICEF plans to mark the occasion with the theme 'Together for Parents,' highlighting the support needed for caregivers.
