European commission roadmap to phase out animal testing

On Monday, the European Commission introduced a roadmap aimed at phasing out animal testing for chemical safety assessments. This initiative aligns with the existing REACH regulatory framework and the Chemical Action Plan presented in July 2025. The roadmap consists of 22 specific actions divided into three strategic pillars and covers 15 sectors, including industrial chemicals, pesticides, biocides, pharmaceuticals, and food additives. The first pillar focuses on accelerating the development of non-animal methods through more than 30 recommendations intended to replace, reduce, or refine current testing protocols. Additionally, the plan establishes clear monitoring indicators to track progress and ensure high safety standards for human health, animal welfare, and the environment. The initiative also aims to maintain Europe's position at the forefront of innovative research.
