New rule changes and VAR protocols announced for the 2026 World Cup
FIFA has introduced several rule changes for the 2026 World Cup to improve game efficiency and officiating. Players being substituted must now leave the pitch within 10 seconds or their replacement must wait one minute to enter, leaving the team temporarily shorthanded. Additionally, there is a new five-second limit for throw-ins and goalkeeper kicks, with time violations resulting in loss of possession or a corner kick. Injured players receiving treatment on the pitch must exit and wait one minute before returning. To improve discipline, only the team captain may approach the referee to discuss decisions, with other players facing potential yellow cards for surrounding officials. Finally, VAR will now strictly monitor and penalize blocking or screening tactics during set pieces, which mirrors basketball rules. Goals resulting from such prohibited contact, even if occurring before the ball is technically in play, may be disallowed by the video assistant referees. These regulations were explained to international football representatives, including members of the Greek national team, by KED member Roberto Alonso.
