United Nations General Assembly to elect new Security Council members
On Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. EST, the United Nations General Assembly will meet in New York to elect five non-permanent members to the 15-member Security Council. These members will serve a two-year term from 2027 to 2028. The seats are allocated by regional groups: one for Africa, one for Asia-Pacific, one for Latin America and the Caribbean, and two for the Western European and Others Group. Zimbabwe is the sole candidate for the African seat, replacing Somalia. Trinidad and Tobago is the only candidate for the Latin American seat, succeeding Panama. The Asia-Pacific race features Kyrgyzstan and the Philippines competing for one seat to replace Pakistan. In the Western European and Others Group, Austria, Germany, and Portugal are vying for two seats currently held by Greece and Denmark. While some candidates run unopposed, others face competitive contests.
