British and Cypriot forces conclude fire-fighting exercise Hephaestus

Crews from the 1310 Flight of the Royal Air Force at Akrotiri completed their training on 1 May and participated in the Republic of Cyprus-coordinated exercise named Hephaestus. The joint training involved the use of Chinook heavy-lift helicopters to enhance interoperability and tactical coordination between British and Cypriot forces. Squadron Leader Joel Babbage, commander of the 1310 Flight, stated that the exercise allowed for the integration of communication procedures and operational planning. The drill served as preparation for the upcoming summer fire season. British authorities confirmed that one Chinook helicopter will remain on standby at the British Bases for immediate deployment throughout the summer. The aircraft was selected for this mission due to its heavy-lift capabilities and performance in high-temperature environments. Crews have utilized their experience in precision flying and load management to improve operational effectiveness. The collaboration aimed to harmonize methods between the two sides for more successful joint fire-fighting responses.
