Diko party leaders discuss the election of the house president in Cyprus
Following recent elections where Diko secured eight seats, the party leader Nikolas Papadopoulos is leading consultations with other political leaders regarding the upcoming election of the House President. Papadopoulos confirmed that his own candidacy is one of the scenarios under review by the party secretariat, though he remains open to cooperation with all parties to ensure functional legislative operations. Meanwhile, Disy deputy leader Efthymios Diplaros argued that Annita Demetriou should remain House President, citing her previous success and strong historical alignment between Disy and Diko. While Diko maintains its status as the only government-supporting party in parliament, some critiques suggest its reduced electoral influence complicates its ambitions for the presidency. Reports indicate that consultations are ongoing, with Diko evaluating proposals from all sides to determine its final position. Despite Diko having 10% of the vote and 37,223 supporters, the party faces challenges in securing broader parliamentary support for its leadership bids. The election process requires a consensus that remains a central point of active inter-party dialogue.
