Maria Angela Holguin arrives in Cyprus for UN-led negotiations
United Nations personal envoy Maria Angela Holguin has arrived in Cyprus for a visit scheduled until June 14, 2026. On June 8, she is set to hold private meetings with the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, followed by a meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman. President Christodoulides stated that these discussions follow recent consultations between UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and EU leadership. The primary objective of the mission is to create conditions for a widened conference that could lead to the resumption of formal negotiations. Christodoulides expressed hope that this diplomatic initiative will break the current deadlock and address the core aspects of the Cyprus issue. While the government emphasizes the need to restart talks from where they stalled in Crans-Montana, there is a distinct shift in focus toward substantive progress rather than just trust-building measures.
