Maria Angela Holguin continues consultations for Cyprus talks
United Nations Personal Envoy Maria Angela Holguin is conducting a series of meetings in Cyprus to prepare for a potential informal multilateral summit in late July or early August. Holguin is scheduled to meet with President Nikos Christodoulides on Friday evening, following a meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman on Saturday. These discussions follow earlier separate sessions held with negotiators and various political figures, including Nikolas Papadopoulos of DIKO and Odysseas Michaelides of the Alma Movement. The current focus is on substantive issues rather than confidence-building measures, as officials seek to move beyond the current deadlock. Government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated that Nicosia aims for this informal gathering to act as a catalyst for resuming official negotiations. Meanwhile, the Turkish Cypriot side has emphasized its own methodology, which is being monitored by observers. The Greek Cypriot negotiator, Menelaos Menelaou, noted a shift in the political landscape regarding terminology on equality, though significant work remains. Success remains contingent upon the stance of Ankara, with further diplomatic efforts expected in the coming weeks.
