Maria Angela Holguin prepares for an expanded conference on the Cyprus issue
United Nations envoy Maria Angela Holguin is conducting a new round of consultations to organize an informal 5+1 meeting aimed at resuming Cyprus reunification negotiations. Following meetings in Nicosia with President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish-Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, Holguin is scheduled to travel to Turkey on Monday and later to Greece and Brussels. President Christodoulides expressed optimism about convening the conference, which is tentatively projected for late July or early August, potentially in Geneva. The UN is emphasizing the role of the European Union in this process, with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reportedly in contact with European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. These officials may visit Ankara ahead of the 5+1 meeting to encourage a constructive Turkish role. Christodoulides noted that he discussed the escalation of recent Turkish rhetoric with Holguin, who is expected to address the matter in Turkey. While specific dates have not been finalized, all parties are focused on the substance of the negotiations to move beyond the stalemate since Crans Montana.
