Tufan Erhurman discusses the upcoming visit of UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin

Tufan Erhurman, leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, stated that the upcoming visit of UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy Maria Angela Holguin on June 8 could represent a turning point for the Cyprus issue. While expecting increased diplomatic activity throughout the summer, Erhurman expressed skepticism regarding the immediate presentation of a new comprehensive peace plan by Antonio Guterres. He emphasized the Turkish Cypriot commitment to a solution through dialogue while warning against both excessive optimism and premature subversion of the process. Erhurman addressed criticisms regarding the Immovable Property Commission, arguing that the mechanism remains an essential tool for compliance with international law. He also dismissed the notion that the Turkish Cypriot observer status in the Organization of Turkic States would lead to automatic international recognition. Furthermore, he highlighted that his side is preparing for future negotiations with patience and determination. He maintained that the focus should remain on a solution that ensures long-term stability and peace. Finally, he reiterated that his community is ready to engage in negotiations in good faith.
