UN envoy continues consultations on Cyprus problem
United Nations Personal Envoy María Ángela Holguín is holding a series of high-level meetings in Cyprus to prepare for an informal multilateral conference, potentially scheduled for late July or early August. On Friday afternoon, Holguín met with the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, at the Presidential Palace. She is also scheduled to meet with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman on Saturday, following an earlier session on Friday. These diplomatic efforts aim to restart negotiations and bridge the differences between the two sides. Reports indicate the discussions are focusing on substantive issues rather than confidence-building measures. Tufan Erhürman has reiterated his position on a 'four-point methodology' regarding political equality, timeframes for talks, respect for past convergences, and the status of the Turkish Cypriot community. Following her visit to Cyprus, Holguín is expected to travel to Ankara and Athens for further discussions with government officials.
