UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin to visit Cyprus for diplomatic talks
Maria Angela Holguin, the personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Cyprus, is scheduled to visit Cyprus from June 7 to 14, 2026. On Monday, June 8, she will hold separate meetings with President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman. The objective of these meetings is to discuss the way forward for the Cyprus issue and explore possibilities for resuming meaningful negotiations. Following her visit to the island, the envoy is expected to travel to Ankara and Athens for further consultations. While Tufan Erhurman characterized the upcoming visit as a potential turning point, he expressed skepticism regarding the likelihood of a new peace plan being presented by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in the immediate future. Meanwhile, ongoing discussions regarding Confidence Building Measures, particularly concerning religious services, are continuing at a technical level. Despite varied political interpretations, the mission remains focused on ending the long-standing stalemate.
