Consumer association reports price fluctuations in Cyprus for late May
The Cyprus Consumers' Association reported price volatility for consumer goods during the second half of May. Based on data from the government's e-kalathi platform and the smart kalathi application, the study identified 165 price increases across 34 categories, with some rising by up to 9.8%. Hardest-hit categories included eggs, dairy, soaps, and personal hygiene items. Specifically, a pack of mayonnaise increased by 9.8% overnight, while a 12-pack of eggs rose by 7.4%. Infant formula saw the largest absolute price increase of 45 cents, despite a smaller percentage rise of 2.5%. During the same period, 133 products recorded price decreases, with an average reduction of 9.4%. Marios Drousiotis, president of the association, expressed concerns regarding why some prices increase while others fall under similar market conditions. He called for an in-depth investigation into these pricing patterns and predicted that price increases may continue until autumn.
