Student with visual impairment alleges discrimination at the University of Cyprus

A student with a severe visual impairment and her father have filed formal complaints against the University of Cyprus, alleging systematic discrimination, victimization, and failure to provide necessary reasonable accommodations during her studies and practical training. The student claims that the lack of support negatively impacted her academic performance and final evaluation, leading her to request an independent committee review, a full reassessment of her grades, and a formal investigation into the institution's handling of her case. Her father further alleges that the university treated his daughter unfairly compared to other students and ignored medical recommendations provided by the Cyprus School for the Blind. Conversely, the University of Cyprus has strongly rejected these allegations as unfounded, maintaining that it adheres to its institutional framework for equal access. The university stated that it provided specific measures, including funding for a support escort and a tutor, as well as extensions for deadlines and schedule adjustments. The dispute has been submitted to the Commissioner for Administration and Protection of Human Rights and the Ministry of Education for further review.
