University of Cyprus faces complaints over disability support
A student with a visual impairment and her father have filed a formal complaint against the University of Cyprus, alleging discrimination, victimization, and a lack of reasonable accommodations throughout her studies. The father claims that despite medical evaluations and expert recommendations, the university failed to provide necessary support, resulting in the student being unable to complete her mandatory internship. He has escalated the matter to the Commissioner for Administration and the Ministry of Education, calling for an independent investigation. In response, the University of Cyprus issued a statement rejecting the allegations as unfounded. The university maintains that it has consistently provided reasonable accommodations, including funding for an internship companion and a tutor, as well as extensions for assignments and modifications to teaching schedules. The university asserts that these measures align with its commitment to equal access and institutional frameworks for students with disabilities.
