Pafos FC proposes restructuring of Cypriot football starting 2027-2028 season
Pafos FC, represented by vice-president of the Cyprus Football Association (KOP) Filippos Georgiou, has submitted a proposal to restructure the national football leagues starting from the 2027-2028 season. The plan includes a transition period in 2026-2027 where three teams will be relegated from the first division and only one promoted from the second. From 2027-2028, both the first and second divisions will consist of 12 teams with 22 regular-season matches. The proposal introduces a new promotion-relegation mechanism where the bottom two teams are directly relegated and the third-from-bottom side plays a playoff match against the third-placed team from the lower league. The third division would be reorganized into two groups of 10 teams. Additional suggestions include hosting the Cup final on a rotating basis among the GSP, AEK Arena, and Alphamega Stadium, and limiting the naturalization of foreign players over 32 years of age without national team coach approval. The initiative aims to enhance competitiveness, economic viability, and the development of local Cypriot players.
