Pafos FC proposes structural reform for Cyprus football
Philippos Georgiou, Vice President of the Cyprus Football Association (CFA) and representative of Pafos FC, has submitted a formal proposal for the structural reform of the Cypriot football system starting from the 2027/2028 season. The plan includes a 12-team league structure for the First and Second Divisions, with a transitional period for the 2026/2027 season involving the relegation of three teams from the First Division and the promotion of only one from the Second. Key adjustments include a new promotion/relegation playoff system where the third-to-last team from the upper division faces the third-place team from the lower division. For the Cyprus Cup, the proposal suggests moving the final date no later than May 15 and rotating the venue between GSP, AEK Arena, and Alphamega Stadium. Additional measures involve restricting the naturalization of foreign players over 32 and requiring the approval of the national team coach for such cases. The objective, according to Georgiou, is to increase commercial revenue, improve infrastructure, and enhance the development of Cypriot players.
