New legislation requires drivers to move vehicles after minor accidents
On April 21, 2026, the Cyprus House of Representatives published an amendment to the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Law. The regulation mandates that drivers involved in minor accidents must move their vehicles to the nearest safe location to prevent traffic obstruction. This requirement applies only when no visible injuries are sustained, police presence is not required, and the vehicles are movable without further damage. Before clearing the scene, drivers must exchange insurance and personal details and document the scene with photographs. Failure to comply with these rules constitutes a criminal offense punishable by a fine of up to €1,000. Additionally, any person who coerces or prevents a driver from complying with these procedures also faces a fine of up to €1,000. Once a vehicle is moved, it must not be abandoned or parked illegally, with some reports noting further penalties of up to €3,000 or one year in prison for severe cases of improper obstruction.
