New road safety legislation allows dash cams in Cyprus
On April 22, 2026, the Road Safety (Amendment) Law of 2026 (N. 103(I)2026) was published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Cyprus. The law, which comes into effect on July 23, 2026, authorizes the installation and use of image recording devices, such as dash cams, in private vehicles, professional vehicles, and government or public sector vehicles. Usage is permitted for three specific purposes: protecting the driver in the event of an accident, documenting traffic code violations or criminal acts for police investigations, and supervising commercial vehicle fleets. The legislation mandates that the operation of these devices and the handling of recorded data must strictly comply with personal data protection laws. Failure to protect individual privacy when using these devices may result in administrative fines or other legal penalties. This new framework aims to improve road safety and provide evidentiary support for accidents and criminal incidents. The regulation applies to a wide range of vehicles, including both private and public sector transport.
