Cyprus legalizes dashcam use effective July 23, 2026

On April 22, 2026, a road safety amendment was published in the Official Gazette of Cyprus, authorizing the use of image-recording devices in private, commercial, and government vehicles. The legislation will officially enter into force on July 23, 2026. Dashcams are permitted for protecting drivers during accidents, documenting traffic violations or criminal acts for police investigation, and monitoring commercial fleets. Users must comply with personal data protection regulations, and the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection will issue specific usage guidelines. Publicly sharing footage containing identifiable individuals or minors without consent is strictly prohibited. While police and insurance companies may utilize the footage, the law specifies that such recordings do not automatically constitute admissible court evidence. The presiding court retains the discretion to determine the admissibility of any footage on a case-by-case basis. Non-compliance with data privacy requirements may lead to administrative fines or legal penalties.
