European Union announces largest forest fire response strategy for 2026

The European Commission has announced a record-level deployment of firefighting resources for the 2026 summer season to mitigate the increasing frequency and intensity of wildfires. A total of 777 firefighters from 14 European nations will be pre-positioned in high-risk areas across Cyprus, Greece, Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal. This initiative marks the highest level of participation since the program's inception in 2022. Additionally, a fleet of 22 firefighting aircraft and 5 helicopters is on standby to support national civil protection efforts. Specifically for Cyprus, the European Union is providing two additional light aircraft, bringing the total to six, and is planning the establishment of a new regional firefighting station by 2026. This station will serve as a hub for six aircraft and provide specialized training for European and Mediterranean civil protection professionals. The Emergency Response Coordination Centre will monitor risks 24/7, utilizing meteorological data and expert support to manage operations.
