Edek party faces leadership changes and potential government withdrawal after election defeat
Following Edek’s exclusion from the parliament, party president Nikos Anastasiou described the result as a heavy defeat caused by organizational weaknesses and toxic rhetoric from former party members. Anastasiou acknowledged his own mistakes and announced that his resignation will be at the disposal of the Central Committee during its meeting this coming Sunday. He emphasized that the party’s future belongs to the younger generation and hinted at potential staff reductions due to cost-cutting measures, while confirming the party holds its own property and has no debts. Regarding the government, Anastasiou stated that Edek paid a political price for its participation and criticized a lack of sufficient support. A decision on whether to withdraw from the government is expected at a party congress before the end of the year, unless circumstances force an earlier departure. The party is now seeking closer cooperation with the Ecologists and DIPA, while explicitly ruling out an alliance with DIKO due to recent behavior. While some reports suggest his resignation was already submitted, official statements clarify that the Central Committee will make the final decision this Sunday.
