Status of the Kemal Ataturk street renaming in Paphos remains pending

The Paphos Municipal Council has decided to remove the name of Kemal Ataturk from a street located in the former Turkish Cypriot district of Mouttalos. Despite this initial decision, the process for selecting a new name has not proceeded, and the matter has not been discussed further by the Council. No official proposals for a new name have been submitted, aside from an informal suggestion made outside of institutional procedures. The Paphos Municipality has sent a letter to the Ministry of Interior requesting guidance on the institutional and procedural framework for renaming streets. As of now, the Ministry of Interior has not provided a formal response. A DISY municipal councilor recently addressed the issue via a recorded statement, citing her previous proposal for renaming. Future decisions regarding the street are expected to depend on the establishment of a new legal framework for street naming and the formation of a competent committee to oversee the process.
