Elam outlines stance for Cyprus House of Representatives speaker election
The ELAM party, led by Christos Christou, confirmed it will field its own candidate for the speaker of the House of Representatives in the first round of voting. Party representative Marios Pelekanos stated that ELAM will not support Annita Dimitriou of DISY, nor any candidate backed by AKEL, including Stefanos Stefanou. While some reports suggested a potential alignment with DIKO leader Nikolas Papadopoulos, party leadership clarified that no final decision has been made on the second round. Christou noted that contact was made with DIKO and the Direct Democracy party, though he emphasized that any collaboration with a candidate backed by AKEL is unlikely. If forced to choose between the remaining candidates in the second round, the party intends to abstain. Current projections suggest a contest between Annita Dimitriou and Stefanos Stefanou, as other candidates may lack sufficient support to advance. The final party position is expected to be ratified during a session held on Thursday, June 4.
