Mayor of Dromolaxia-Meneou calls for urgent coastal erosion measures
Kypros Andronikou, the mayor of Dromolaxia-Meneou, has formally requested state intervention to address worsening coastal erosion between the Pervolia Lighthouse and Meneou. The mayor stated that this erosion threatens local infrastructure, including a pedestrian walkway that the municipality had to stabilize with concrete blocks after state services allegedly failed to act on earlier promises from September. Although plans for breakwaters were initially developed, the Department of Environment blocked the project, advocating for milder alternative interventions. A follow-up meeting held in May with representatives from the Departments of Environment, Geological Survey, Public Works, and the Larnaca District Administration failed to resolve the ongoing delays. Andronikou argues that immediate action is necessary to protect the local economy and public access to the sea. The municipality remains critical of the slow state response, which they believe has exacerbated the damage. Official deliberations regarding the appropriate mitigation strategies are currently ongoing.
