Cyprus defense minister discusses SAFE program loan
On June 3, 2026, Cypriot Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas stated that the SAFE program is intended to modernize the military by improving interoperability. The government has signed a loan agreement for the program, which provides for up to 1.2 billion euros in funding. Minister Palmas clarified that this amount will not be utilized in full unless specific operational needs arise. Procedural issues currently remain pending before the first funds can be withdrawn to support national defense and the local defense industry. Furthermore, the minister emphasized that any withdrawal of funds requires prior consultation with the Ministry of Finance due to the nature of the loan contract. The initiative is officially positioned as a strategic effort to enhance the country's defensive shielding capabilities.
