Cyprus General Healthcare System marks seventh anniversary
Cyprus' General Healthcare System (GeSY) has celebrated its seventh anniversary, with the Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) reporting over 1 million registered beneficiaries. Between June 2025 and May 2026, 839,955 people visited personal doctors, 676,458 visited specialists, 541,456 had lab tests, and 335,380 utilized diagnostic services. During this period, 726,044 beneficiaries received medication, and over 90,000 surgical procedures were performed. HIO Director General Ifigenia Kammitsi stated the system is maturing and entering a phase focused on quality and efficiency. The organisation identified and recovered €19 million from problematic compensation claims after conducting 850,000 audits. Furthermore, an actuarial study by the International Labour Organisation projects the system's financial sustainability until at least 2033. New additions include 120 innovative drugs and over 200 medical products, while new clinical guidelines for conditions like multiple sclerosis, hypertension, and osteoarthritis were introduced.
