Cyprus general healthcare system reports seventh year activity metrics

Seven years after its implementation, the Cyprus Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) reported that the General Healthcare System (GeSY) has reached 1,036,681 registered beneficiaries. During the period of June 2025 to May 2026, data shows 839,955 visits to personal physicians and 676,458 visits to specialists. Additionally, 541,456 beneficiaries underwent laboratory tests, 335,380 utilized diagnostic centers, and 356,028 visited dentists. Pharmacies dispensed medication or medical products to 726,044 beneficiaries, while over 90,000 surgical procedures were performed. The system also processed over 900 requests for medical treatment abroad, with more than 450 of these involving patients already receiving care outside of Cyprus. New additions during this period included 120 innovative drugs, 105 therapies or protocol updates, and 230 medical technology products. HIO officials, including Director General Ifigeneia Kammitsi and Board Chairman Stavros Michael, stated that the system is entering a new phase of maturity focused on service quality, long-term sustainability, and resource management.
