Cyprus parliament to elect new speaker using new electronic procedures
On June 4, 2026, the newly elected Cypriot House of Representatives is convening to elect a new Speaker. This session follows the parliamentary elections held on May 24. For the first time, an electronic voting system will be utilized under revised parliamentary regulations. The process will begin with the swearing-in of the 56 members of parliament and religious group representatives. To win on the first ballot, a candidate must secure an absolute majority of 29 votes. If no candidate reaches this threshold, a second round will be held between the two candidates who received the most votes. In the event of a tie during the final stage, a public lottery will be conducted by the presiding member to determine the winner. The session is being chaired by senior MP Zacharias Koulias of DIKO. The new regulations also provide for the election of a Deputy Speaker and an assistant, though these are not part of today's immediate agenda.
